Marketing automation comparison: Segmentic vs an SMS gateway

We already have an SMS gateway. Do we still need Segmentic?

These two are not rivals. An SMS gateway owns the line, the operator relationship and the delivery of a message. Segmentic decides who that message goes to, when, and whether it should go at all. Segmentic sends its own SMS through those same gateways, so nothing you already have is replaced.

Our take

Keep the gateway. What you are missing is the decision layer above it.

An SMS gateway answers one question: send this text to this list. It does not answer where the list came from, why today, why this person and not that one, or what happened afterwards. Segmentic is that layer, and it uses your gateway to do the sending.

Segmentic is a better fit when
A team building recipient lists by hand in a spreadsheet, unable to say which message produced revenue, or wanting sends to follow what a user actually did.
an SMS gateway is a better fit when
Anyone sending only one-time codes and transactional notices to a fixed list, with no interest in measuring impact. A gateway alone is enough for that, and cheaper.

This page does not compare one company with another. The other column is what an Iranian SMS sending platform typically does, taken from the public documentation of several common ones rather than from a named vendor. They differ, and yours may do something not listed here. Segmentic details come from the product and its documentation.

Complete Segmentic vs an SMS gateway feature comparison

The other column is what a typical Iranian SMS gateway does. Where it wins it genuinely wins, and adding Segmentic takes none of it away.

Who gets the message, and when

Building the recipient listSegmentic advantage
SegmenticLive segments from behaviour: anyone who abandoned a cart, has not bought in thirty days, or crossed a churn score enters and leaves on its own.
an SMS gatewayA fixed list, uploaded once. Tomorrow it is the same list, even if half of those people bought yesterday.
Send timingSegmentic advantage
SegmenticDriven by user events, with delays, branches and conditions on a journey canvas.
an SMS gatewayNow, or at an hour you choose.
Message personalisationSegmentic advantage
SegmenticAny profile attribute and any event property, with variables and a preview before sending.
an SMS gatewayColumn substitution from the uploaded spreadsheet.
Frequency caps and quiet hoursSegmentic advantage
SegmenticA cap per window, quiet hours and a minimum gap between messages, applied across the whole account.
an SMS gatewayUsually absent. Two campaigns at once means one person gets two messages and nothing stops it.
Consent and unsubscribeSegmentic advantage
SegmenticA preference centre, subscription topics, and a suppression list no sweep deletes.
an SMS gatewayUnsubscribes happen at the operator line and never reach your list.

What happened next

Real campaign impactSegmentic advantage
SegmenticControl groups, confidence intervals, contamination checks and estimated incremental revenue: how much the message created, not how many bought after it.
an SMS gatewaySends and deliveries. Whether the revenue came from the message is not something it can say.
Seeing user behaviourSegmentic advantage
SegmenticEvents from the app and website, funnels, cohorts, retention, paths and RFM.
an SMS gatewayNo behavioural data, because it is not connected to your app or site.
Delivery reportingBoth
SegmenticTakes the operator's own delivery status and keeps it beside every other channel.
an SMS gatewayFull delivery receipts from the operator. This is its job.

Channels, cost, and the sending itself

Other channelsSegmentic advantage
SegmenticMobile and web push, email, in-app, on-site, templated WhatsApp, webhooks, Bale, Eitaa and Rubika, all in the same journey.
an SMS gatewaySMS. Some gateways add email or WhatsApp, each as a separate campaign with a separate report.
Transactional SMS and one-time codesBoth
SegmenticTransactional sends through the API, on a service line with an approved pattern.
an SMS gatewayDoes the same thing directly, with one fewer layer in between.
Dedicated line and operator approvalan SMS gateway advantage
SegmenticNone, and none needed: it sends through your line.
an SMS gatewayThe dedicated line, the service line, the regulator-approved pattern and the operator relationship are all its own.
Cost per messagean SMS gateway advantage
SegmenticThe per-message cost stays whatever your gateway charges. Segmentic charges for the platform, not for the message.
an SMS gatewayThe cheapest way to send a single SMS, with no layer above it required.
Getting startedan SMS gateway advantage
SegmenticNeeds an SDK on the app or site before behaviour can be seen.
an SMS gatewayOne API key and a spreadsheet, today.

What matters in practice

Three things teams usually learn six months into working from spreadsheets

A fixed list is wrong by the second day

A file uploaded today contains people who bought yesterday and misses the ones who abandoned a cart this morning. A live segment keeps the condition and changes the membership itself.

  • Automatic entry and exit
  • No re-uploading

Without a control group, a revenue number is not a number

Some revenue follows every SMS campaign. The question is how much of it would have happened anyway, and the only way to answer it is to withhold the message from part of the same audience.

  • Control group and confidence interval
  • Estimated incremental revenue

Segmentic does not replace the gateway

Segmentic's own SMS goes out through Iranian gateways. If you already use Kavenegar, IPPanel, Magfa or MeliPayamak, it stays, and you give Segmentic its key.

  • Your own line and sender number
  • Your own operator contract

Selection guide

This is not a choice between two products. It is a question about where you are in the work

Choose Segmentic if

  • You build the recipient list by hand in a spreadsheet, every time.
  • You cannot say which campaign produced how much revenue.
  • You want sends to follow what a user did in the app or on the site.
  • You have more than one channel and want one person not to be hit by all three at once.

Choose an SMS gateway if

  • You only send one-time codes and transactional notices.
  • Your audience is a fixed list that does not change.
  • You have no app or site producing user behaviour.
  • The lowest possible monthly cost matters more than measuring impact.

Putting Segmentic beside your SMS gateway

This is not a migration, it is a layer. The gateway, the line, the sender number and the operator contract all stay where they are.

  1. 1

Put the gateway's API key into Segmentic's channel settings. The sender number and approved patterns stay the same.

  2. 2

Install the SDK on the app or site so behaviour arrives. Live segments mean nothing until it does.

  3. 3

Take one campaign you send by hand today and send it from Segmentic with a control group. The impact number arrives the first time.

Method and sources

The other column describes a category rather than a product, so no vendor's figures or prices appear in it. What is written about Segmentic comes from the product itself, including the list of gateways its SMS really goes through.

  • Segmentic capabilities from the product and its documentation
  • The SMS gateways Segmentic actually sends through: Kavenegar, IPPanel, Magfa, MeliPayamak and SMS.ir
  • The other column, from the public documentation of common Iranian SMS gateways

Straight answers

What to know before you choose

Does this mean cancelling our SMS gateway?

No. Segmentic has no SMS line of its own and sends through your Iranian gateway. The operator contract, the sender number and the approved patterns stay yours.

So do we pay for messages twice?

No. The per-message cost is what your gateway already charges. Segmentic charges for the platform rather than for the message, and in exchange some of the messages that go to the wrong people today are not sent at all.

Can we start without installing the SDK?

Yes, with CSV import or the business API. But live segments and behaviour-driven journeys do not work until events arrive, and those two are what make this layer worth having.

How is this different from scheduling a campaign in the gateway?

Scheduling means send at ten. A journey means send if the user abandoned a cart, has not returned within two hours and has had no message in thirty days, and do not send if they bought. The difference is the condition, not the clock.

Test the choice against your setup

Still choosing between Segmentic and an SMS gateway?

If the choice is still unclear, we can review your journeys, channels, data volume, and deployment constraints together. The goal is to decide whether Segmentic belongs in the project and define a sensible pilot if it does.
